Summit on Canadian Soil Health


The Soil Conservation Council of Canada's (SCCC) first ever Summit on Canadian Soil Health was held Tuesday, December 1 in Calgary, AB in conjunction with CropLife Canada's GrowCanada Conference.

Best-selling author, David Montgomery provided the keynote address and spoke to his book Dirt: The Erosion of Civilization. Producer and industry panels provided solutions to the challenges around soil health and sustainability.

The Summit on Canadian Soil Health was a fantastic forum for attendees to gain a better understanding on soil health issues and how we can work together to protect and care for it.

Challenge Speaker: Fran Burr, executive director, Canadian Round Table for Sustainable Crops

Panelists' perspectives on challenges to Canada's soil health:

  • Soil health in Eastern Canada: Shawn McRae, farmer, innovator, researcher and soil care advocate
  • Soil health in Western Canada: Tim Nerbas, farmer with a background in soil science and conservation agrology
  • Science: A few twists and turns on the road to soil health: Dr. David Lobb, senior research chair, watershed systems; professor, landscape ecology, department of soil science, faculty of agriculture and food sciences, University of Manitoba
  • Industry: Garth Whyte, president and CEO, Fertilizer Canada
  • Government: Dr. Denis Angers, principal research scientist with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada; adjunct professor of soil science, Laval and McGill universities
