National Soil Conservation Week

April 21 – April 27, 2024

What are your plans the third week in April?

If you said, “celebrating National Soil Conservation Week (NSCW),” then ding ding ding, you are a winner.

National Soil Conservation Week, which starts on Sunday, April 21 this year, is the best way to create awareness around soil health and conservation in Canada. The Soil Conservation Council of Canada (SCCC) is proud to lead NSCW again this year.

It may not cross your mind often, but soil is a big deal. Soil is where you make your living. It sustains our rural communities. It grows our food. It even cleans our air and water and supports biodiversity. Whether you make your living as a farmer or enjoy the benefits soil brings to all Canadians, soils have an impact on you.

In November 2021, we hosted the Summit on Canadian Soil Health to focus on moving forward on making soil as important to all Canadians as air and water is now.  We have a long way to go to achieve that goal, but now is the time to talk to Canadians about our precious soil resource.  In 2024 we will be working with partners inside and outside the agriculture industry to take action on soil health.

SCCC will be concentrating on some key priorities in 2024.

    1. Identifying high priority areas of research to drive appropriate actions and investment in production practices that ensure the sustainability of Canadian, soils.
    2. Increasing the quality, quantity and access to soil health and conservation information available to producers and ag professionals in Canada
    3. Using the best available information, experience and advice to inform decisions of public and private sector decisions on future investments in policy and program that supports soil conservation and health in Canada
    4. Raise the awareness of the connection between soil health and conservation and the well-being of Canadians and make soil as important as air and water.

National Soil Conservation Week is a great opportunity to highlight the importance of soil, but it doesn’t have to stop there. The Soil Conservation Council of Canada cares about soil and is active year-round, but our strength only comes from our membership. Together, we can improve soil health, we can bring the benefits of soil to all Canadians and we can strengthen our role as a world leader in soil conservation.
